Magnesia at Cold Wars

The Battle of Magnesia at Cold Wars, 2013
Antiochus the Great had reunited much of Alexander's original conquest as he restored the Selecuid empire to its greatness. Now a new menace confronted him that was unlike anything Alexander had ever seen. Rome! The great clash between the two empires took place at the battle of Magnesia in 192 BC. 600-800 28mm figures and lots of fast moving play. The game will be played Saturday evening at 8 pm on March 9. Up to 8 players. Approximately 1200 points per side.

  2. At Cold Wars 2013 I put on a large game of Impetus based on the Battle of Magnesia. The games went very well with 8 players. We used a very simplified initiative system to keep the game moving. Overall the battle went like it did historically with the Roman right under great pressure but able to hold on as the Selecuid left collapsed and the Selecuid army routed. We've found that the Romans tend to under perform in Impetus when compared with other armies in EI4 and have been experimenting with improving the army's performance through amending the line relief rule and discounting the Hastati/Principes combo. When we've perfected our system we'll offer it to the Impetus community.

On a personal note, I love how the battle looks. It really captures the sense of mass that I've dreamed of in playing ancients. I do think the scenario was a tad too big for a convention with inexperienced players. Still we managed to get the game done to completion in 3 1/2 hours. Take a look at the pictures below and let me know what you think.

As a final comment we managed to set up the game with almost a thousand figures in under 45 minutes and pack it up in even less time. One of the things I most love about Impetus. Many thanks to Simon (Bagatrix), Dave and Dennis for their assistance and lending of figures. Much appreciated guys.
